RE: Snow load

randy,
The problem isn't snow, it is late season if it rains on a big snow load. The combo can be very heavy. If you do shovel, use something like a push broom so you don't damage your roof.

RE: rotten meat smell- UPDATE - UPDATE

clint, how much charcoal did you stick in there? i've put 10 lbs on paper plates in various locations, but left it closed up, with the a/c running...after 2 weeks it's better, but still very noticeable. maybe more charcoal? maybe opening it up? my next step is the ozone generator....
It needs to be activated charcoal.

Sorry to hear about that. I hope he was well insured.
Guess it is back to the frozen North for you (just like me). I bet Florida would have been real nice this time of year.

RE: Replacing G rated tires with E rated

E rated tires will flex more and develop more heat. I don't know where Hill Country is, but I would be less likely to do that in a southern state.

RE: Gas prices dropping like lead balloon in the US

It's still $3.89 here in Madison, AL; I saw one diesel price yesterday of $4.59.
Yep, we're getting ripped off.
That is almost the same as Anchorage.

RE: Checking tire pressure with jacks down...

The load changes the shape of the tire in contact with the ground, not the pressure in the tire to any significant amount. That is why over-inflated tires wear in the middle.

RE: Bunk Ends closed in Bear areas

Black bears are harmless and only need to be respected not feared.
We live in a county with one of the highest bear populations in the state and have camped around bears for 20+ years in tents before the hybrid and have had many encounters,i hope they continue.
I have had a number of encounters myself, including the rug on my wall. You need to be smart, this a search on my local paper for black bear maulings.
They do need to be respected, and they are not always harmless.

I have a friend who had a pacbrake exhaust brake and liked it. They have a lot of good reading on their website as does the Jacobs website.

RE: Closing house & turning off heat??

summer cabins are designed to do that. houses aren't
bumpy
What is different about their design? most are just lake homes that are only used in the summer. No design difference whatsoever that I am aware of.
There is a big difference in design between a cold and warm foundation anywhere where there is significant frost penetration. If you allow your foundation soils to freeze and you have frost susceptible soils, you can damage your foundation.
The difference in design will depend on soil types and depth of frost penetration. In general, the depth of the foundation or non-frost susceptible soils will go to the depth of freezing for a cold foundation.
I would always recommend that folks keep their heat on during the winter if they live in a cold climate. Also keep in mind that your water supply line can freeze if it isn't used regularly.

RE: Armed for Trip to Alaska

IIRC firearms can not be privately shipped from/to other than a licensed dealer.
You can mail a long gun to yourself, or Fedex to a dealer. Or you can fill out the Canadian paperwork and take a long gun with you as long as it isn't semi-auto.

RE: battery discharge on gauge

The voltage should be a little lower just because of the extra lights being used. Trailer marker and brake lights. Plus you probably have your CO detector going on the trailer and maybe a few other small things. These few extra amps going to the trailer might make your voltage show a little lower on your TV.

RE: Fuel Availibility

I filled up with diesel in Hickory Thursday morning for $4.09. All the gas pumps were out.. Noticed that a lot of stations had bags over the gas handles but diesel was available... T-10
Man, I just filled up here in Alaska for $4.57 for Diesel. No shortage and the state gas tax has just been repealed. What the frig?!

RE: Diesel less $$$ than gas?

We just came down from Canada and Diesel was cheaper than Premium gas up there.
Still $0.50 more than regular unleaded in Anchorage. Winter blend, too so the mileage is down to 14-15 :(

RE: 1 generator vs. 2 piggy backed

ForTheFunOfIt , I am not electrically inclined so I ask this question of you. How did you hook yor 2000 up to the whole house when the electric went out ? Living in Mn. and in the country ( have our own water well ) I would think it would be nice to have the 2000 Honda which we own for a back up . I know it would not run the whole house , but does anyone know if it would run the house furnace?
This is the transfer switch that I installed at my house for use with an EU2000i. I can run everything I need (natural gas heater, lights, refrigerator, etc.) at my house. Would have to get a second EU2000i to run the microwave.
